Nutan Samarth Bahl (1936–1991) was a powerhouse of talent whose cinematic legacy continues to inspire generations. Known for her expressive eyes, naturalistic acting, and emotionally rich performances, Nutan redefined the portrayal of women in Hindi cinema.
Born into a film family—her mother Shobhna Samarth was a noted actress and filmmaker—Nutan made her debut at just 14 in Hamari Beti (1950), directed by her mother. Her early roles in Nagina and Hum Log (1951) earned her recognition, but it was Seema (1955) that catapulted her to stardom and won her the first of five Filmfare Best Actress Awards.
A Career of Depth and Dignity
Unlike many of her contemporaries, Nutan chose roles that reflected inner strength, social issues, and emotional complexity. Films like Sujata (1959), Bandini (1963), Milan (1967), and Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki (1978) showcased her ability to portray conflicted women with grace and realism.
In the 1980s, she transitioned to character roles, often playing dignified maternal figures in films like Meri Jung (1985) and Naam (1986), earning her sixth Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress.
Honors and Recognition
Nutan was awarded the Padma Shri in 1974 for her contribution to Indian cinema. She remains the only actress to win five Filmfare Best Actress Awards in non-consecutive years—a record that stood for decades.
India Post Stamp Tribute
On 13 February 2011, India Post issued a ₹5 commemorative stamp featuring Nutan as part of the Legendary Actresses of India series. The stamp, printed by Security Printing Press, Hyderabad, captures her iconic elegance and cinematic legacy.
