Madan Mohan: Ghazal Maestro of Hindi Cinema & 2004 India Post Stamp Tribute

Madan Mohan Kohli (1924–1975), fondly remembered as the Ghazal King of Bollywood, was one of the most melodious and emotionally resonant music directors in Indian cinema. Born in Baghdad on 25 June 1924, he moved to India as a child and grew up surrounded by music and film culture, thanks to his father’s association with Bombay Talkies and Filmistan Studios.

Madan Mohan’s compositions were known for their classical depth, poetic sensitivity, and unmatched emotional range. His music elevated the ghazal form in Hindi films, blending traditional ragas with cinematic storytelling.

Madan Mohan composed for over 100 films, including Woh Kaun Thi (1964), Mera Saaya (1966), Dastak (1970), and Haqeeqat (1964). His collaborations with Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammed Rafi, and Talat Mahmood produced timeless melodies like “Lag Ja Gale”, “Aap Ki Nazron Ne Samjha”, and “Mai Ri Main Kaase Kahoon.”

He won the National Film Award for Best Music Direction for Dastak in 1971. Despite limited commercial success during his lifetime, his music gained cult status posthumously, influencing generations of composers and listeners.

Madan Mohan’s son Sanjeev Kohli revived his unused compositions for Veer-Zaara (2004), introducing his genius to a new generation. His legacy is celebrated through retrospectives, radio tributes, and scholarly works.

On 25 June 2004, marking his 80th birth anniversary, India Post issued a ₹5 commemorative stamp featuring Madan Mohan. Designed by India Security Press, Nashik, the stamp showcases his portrait with musical notes and a harmonium motif, symbolizing his contribution to Indian film music.
