Dev Anand: Evergreen Star of Indian Cinema & India Post’s Stamp Tribute

Dev Anand (1923–2011), born Dharamdev Pishorimal Anand, was one of the most celebrated actors, directors, and producers in Indian cinema. Known for his youthful charm, distinctive style, and romantic persona, he earned the title of Evergreen Star for his six-decade-long career that shaped Bollywood’s golden era.

Born in Shakargarh, Punjab (now in Pakistan), Dev Anand graduated in English Literature from Government College, Lahore. He moved to Bombay in the 1940s, where his passion for cinema led him to his debut film Hum Ek Hain (1946). His breakthrough came with Ziddi (1948), and he soon became a heartthrob with hits like Baazi, Guide, Jewel Thief, and Johny Mera Naam.

Dev Anand co-founded Navketan Films in 1949, producing and directing socially relevant and stylistically bold films. His 1965 classic Guide was India’s official entry to the Oscars and remains a landmark in storytelling and music. He was known for his fast-paced dialogue delivery, side-swept hairstyle, and never-aging persona.

He worked with legends like Waheeda Rehman, Zeenat Aman, and Hema Malini, and mentored many newcomers. His final film Chargesheet (2011) was released shortly before his passing.

Dev Anand received the Padma Bhushan in 2001 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2002 for his contribution to Indian cinema. His legacy continues to inspire filmmakers and actors across generations.

On 3 December 2022, marking his 11th death anniversary, India Post issued a ₹5 commemorative stamp featuring Dev Anand. The stamp, part of the 100 Years of Indian Cinema series, showcases his iconic profile with film reel motifs and retro typography. It was printed by Security Printing Press, Hyderabad, in multicolor offset format.
