Mukesh: The Soulful Voice of Hindi Cinema & India Post’s 2024 Stamp
Mukesh Chand Mathur (1923–1976), known mononymously as Mukesh, was one of the most iconic playback singers in Indian cinema. His deep, emotive voice became synonymous with heartbreak, romance, and introspection, earning him the title of “Tragedy King of Playback Singing.”
Born in Delhi, Mukesh’s journey from a government peon to a musical legend began when actor Motilal discovered his talent and mentored him. His debut song “Dil Hi Bujha Hua Ho To” (1941) marked the beginning of a career that would span over three decades and over 1,200 songs.
Mukesh’s voice was the soul behind many of Raj Kapoor’s most memorable performances. Songs like “Awara Hoon”, “Jeena Yahan Marna Yahan”, and “Kabhi Kabhie Mere Dil Mein” remain timeless classics. He won the National Film Award for “Kai Baar Yuhi Dekha Hai” from Rajnigandha (1973), and four Filmfare Awards, cementing his place in music history.
Mukesh’s style was marked by simplicity and emotional depth. Unlike his contemporaries, he didn’t rely on vocal gymnastics but instead focused on conveying raw feeling—making him relatable to millions.
To commemorate his 100th birth anniversary, India Post issued a ₹5 commemorative stamp on 24 July 2024. The stamp features Mukesh in a contemplative pose, with musical notes and vintage motifs in the background. It was printed by Calcutta Security Printers Ltd., with a release of 800,000 stamps, as part of the Golden Voices of Yesteryear series.
