Pushkar Mela: India’s Largest Camel Fair & Cultural Spectacle in Rajasthan
Held annually in the sacred town of Pushkar, Rajasthan, the Pushkar Mela (also known as the Pushkar Camel Fair or Kartik Mela) is one of the world’s largest livestock and cultural festivals. It takes place during the Hindu lunar month of Kartik, culminating on Kartik Purnima, a full moon day considered highly auspicious for bathing in the holy Pushkar Lake.
The fair is a vibrant blend of religious rituals, camel and cattle trading, folk performances, rural sports, and handicraft bazaars, attracting over 200,000 visitors including farmers, pilgrims, and international tourists.
Pushkar is one of the five sacred dhams in Hinduism. According to legend, Lord Brahma slew the demon Vajra Nabhwith a lotus flower, whose petals fell to earth and formed the Pushkar Lake. On Kartik Purnima, it is believed that 330 million Hindu deities visit the lake, making it a prime pilgrimage site.
The fair originated as a livestock trading event, where thousands of camels, horses, and cattle were bought and sold. Over time, it evolved into a grand cultural celebration showcasing Rajasthan’s heritage.
Visitors can witness camel races, bridal competitions, turban-tying contests, folk dances, and puppet shows. The fairground transforms into a carnival with Ferris wheels, food stalls, and craft exhibitions. The Pushkar Temple, dedicated to Lord Brahma, is also a major attraction.
The fair is a photographer’s paradise, offering stunning visuals of decorated camels, colorful turbans, and sunset rituals by the lake.
To honor the cultural legacy of Pushkar Mela, India Post issued a ₹5 commemorative stamp in November 2009. The stamp features a camel caravan against the desert sunset, capturing the essence of Rajasthan’s nomadic traditions. It was printed by Security Printing Press, Hyderabad, in multicolor offset format.
