Mahatma Hansraj: A Beacon of Education and Social Service

Mahatma Hansraj, also known as Lala Hansraj, was an eminent Indian educationist and a devoted follower of the Arya Samaj movement founded by Swami Dayanand Saraswati. Born on April 19, 1864, in the small town of Bajwara, Punjab, he dedicated his life to uplifting education and social welfare. Let’s explore the remarkable journey of this visionary leader.

Early Life and Education
Hansraj hailed from a Punjabi Hindu Khatri family. His father passed away when he was just 19, and his elder brother, Mulkhraja, took charge of his upbringing and education. The turning point in Hansraj’s life occurred when he attended a lecture by Swami Dayanand. Inspired by the Swami’s teachings, he pursued his Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree with distinction.

Founding the D.A.V. Schools System
Rather than opting for a conventional job, Hansraj, along with fellow Arya Samaji Gurudatta Vidyarthi, established the Dayanand Anglo-Vedic Schools System (D.A.V.) in Lahore on June 1, 1886. The first D.A.V. school was established in memory of Swami Dayanand, who had passed away three years earlier. This educational system aimed to blend modern education with Vedic principles.

Principal and Social Reformer
Hansraj served as the Principal of the Dayanand Anglo-Vedic College, Lahore, for an impressive 25 years. He also held the position of president of the provincial Arya Pradeshik Pratinidhi Sabha, the D.A.V. section of Arya Samaj in Punjab. His commitment extended beyond education; he actively participated in social service during natural disasters and famines.

Legacy and Recognition
Mahatma Hansraj’s legacy lives on through numerous educational institutions named in his honor. Notable among them are:
  • Hans Raj Mahila Maha Vidyalaya, Jalandhar, Punjab
  • Hans Raj College, Delhi University, where Mahatma Hans Raj College Road stands at the heart of the University’s North campus.
Mahatma Hansraj’s unwavering commitment to education and social welfare continues to inspire generations. His vision and dedication remain a beacon for those who strive to make a positive impact on society.
