The defining moment of Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon's life came during the 1971 Indo-Pak War. As a Flying Officer serving with the No. 18 Squadron of the IAF, stationed at Srinagar Air Base, he faced overwhelming odds when Pakistani aircraft launched a surprise attack on the base on December 14, 1971.

Despite being outnumbered and outgunned, Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon displayed extraordinary valor and presence of mind. Single-handedly defending the airbase against waves of enemy aircraft, he engaged the enemy with unmatched skill and determination. His actions not only repelled the attack but inflicted heavy losses on the enemy forces.

Tragically, Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon's heroic stand came at a great cost. While valiantly defending the airbase, he was hit by enemy fire and succumbed to his injuries. His selfless sacrifice and unwavering bravery earned him the Param Vir Chakra, making him the first and only IAF officer to receive India's highest military honor posthumously.
