Rani Durgavati (1524–1564) remains one of India’s most celebrated warrior queens, remembered for her courage, leadership, and sacrifice. Born into the Chandela dynasty, she married Dalpat Shah, the ruler of Gondwana. After his death, she assumed the reins of the kingdom and became a symbol of resilience and valour.  

Her reign was marked by prosperity, justice, and strong administration. She encouraged agriculture, trade, and welfare measures, ensuring the kingdom flourished under her leadership. However, her legacy is most remembered for her resistance against Mughal expansion.  

In 1564, when Mughal forces under Asaf Khan invaded Gondwana, Rani Durgavati chose to fight rather than surrender. Leading her army from the front, she displayed unmatched bravery. Despite being heavily outnumbered, she fought valiantly, inflicting significant losses on the Mughal forces. Ultimately, facing defeat, she chose martyrdom over capture, ending her life with dignity.  

Her sacrifice made her a legendary figure in Indian history, inspiring generations with her indomitable spirit. India Post honoured her legacy by issuing a commemorative postage stamp, immortalising her as a symbol of courage and patriotism.
