Agni Missile: India's Advanced Ballistic Weapon System

India’s Agni missile series is one of the most significant achievements in the nation’s defense technology. Developed under the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP), the Agni series represents India’s commitment to self-reliance in strategic defense systems.

The name “Agni” derives from the Sanskrit word for fire, symbolizing power and energy. The program was initiated by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in the late 1980s to enhance India’s nuclear deterrence capability. Over the decades, the Agni series has evolved into a family of ballistic missiles with varying ranges and advanced technologies. 

Evolution of Agni Missiles 
The first test of Agni-I was conducted in 1989 as a technology demonstrator. Since then, India has developed multiple variants, including Agni-I, II, III, IV, and V, each with extended ranges and improved accuracy. Agni-V, with a range of over 5,000 km, places India among the select group of nations capable of deploying Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs).
